Emily Turns Three

Our princess Emily is now three years old and I can't help but be a little sad that our baby is growing up into a bright beautiful little girl.  As Emily crosses this milestone in her life I had to go back through pictures and reminisce on her first year and listen to old videos of her singing "Wheels on the Bus".  It's amazing how life moves so fast.

At her wellness checkup Emily was a little nervous about seeing the doctor as she has always known what happens when visiting the doctor's office, you get vaccinated.  So before we went I explained to her all that the doctor would do during her checkup.  Emily was a little hesitant when the doctor came in and whimpered a little but allowed her pediatrician to finish her checkup.  She did so well that Dr. Fuentes let her pick what color lollipop she wanted and gave her a Dora sticker.  Our above average child is now 38" tall and weighs 34 lbs.  Needless to say she is very healthy and well developed and I can vouch for that because my back aches when I have to carry her anywhere.

At this age Emily has a great memory and can sing songs back to you after hearing them a couple of times.  A couple of days after her wellness checkup she remembered the procedure the doctor performed on her and did pretend play where she repeated the procedure to me as her patient.  She did so well in remembering that she even remembered to give me a pretend lollipop and sticker as well as a compliment on how great of a patient I was with her.  I am constantly being dumbfounded at some of the thing this child does.

Emily's current favorite show is one called "Peppa Pig" that is shown on Nick Jr. but was originally created in the UK, so Peppa and all the shows characters speak with European accents.  Some of the shows dialogue is a bit different than what American people would use and it cracks me up when Emily uses some of it on us.  For example, the show uses the word "naughty" to describe unfavorable behavior instead of the word "bad" as we would use here in the US.  Brian accidentally dropped some food on the floor during dinner and Emily said "naughty daddy".  I could have died from all the laughing I did when I heard her use those words.  It was hilarious!

Aside from picking up language from Peppa Pig, Emily also listens very well to those around her and as a result she has an extensive vocabulary for her age.  Her teacher at school, Miss Danielle, tells me she is impressed at how well Emily speaks compared to her peers.  Danielle also tells me that Emily is a little bossy and actually helps to round up the kids or settle them down.  This doesn't surprise me because she is constantly bossing her little sister around, although Avery doesn't always do what Emily tells her to do which can cause fighting to happen.  When she isn't being bossy Emily can be very sweet and has great manners.  She knows when to say "please" and "thank you" and surprises people when she tells them "bless you" after they sneeze.

At this age Emily has become a little whiny.  We are still working on potty training at school and at home.  Emily has always done things her way and complete milestones at her convenience.  We have started wearing panties at school to help her with her training and she seems to be doing well, having only one accident a day or none at all.  At home it is a whole other story, it is very difficult to get Emily to sit on the toilet and when you ask her she says, "I'm fine".  Then five minutes after asking her she will have an accident. Her problem is being distracted until its too late to do anything.  She hates to be pulled away from her shows and is too involve with play to come tell mom she needs to potty.  I have created potty charts to see if that helps but she still doesn't want to sit most of the time.  She is also still attached to her pacifier except now she calls it a paci instead of a puppy.  I don't let her take it to school and I have been trying to only give it to her right before she goes to sleep.  In these next few months we will be working on getting rid of the pacifier and potty training.  We hope to have her trained by the end of the year.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Shaking It

During our stay in San Antonio for our Sea World trip, the girls got excited about all the accessories that came with the room that we booked, in particular the phone and radio/alarm clock.  They could not keep their hands off of them and kept picking up the phone and saying "Hello, ok, goodbye".  While they were pushing buttons on the clock they turned the radio on to a preset station that they obviously enjoyed.  Now we can enjoy watching them dancing to a song that is not appropriate for children but will make you laugh.
